Introduction

The Guides hub is the best starting point for War in the North: Legacy Edition. Here you will find the beginner guide, control explanations, combat tutorials and answers to the questions every new player asks about Aspyr's 2026 remaster of the 2011 classic. Because the Legacy Edition restores 3-player online co-op, adds on-the-fly character hot-swapping and introduces a rebuilt user interface, our guides are written specifically for this edition rather than copied from old walkthroughs. Each guide breaks the game into clear steps — how to move, block, dodge, spend stat points and survive your first battles from Bree to Fornost — so you always know what to do next, whether you are a returning player or completely new to the North.

Everything a new player needs for the opening hours

What It CoversThe beginner guide walks you through the opening hours in Bree, explaining the controls, the basic combat loop of light chains and heavy finishers, and how to survive your first battles against the goblins and wargs of the North.
Key MechanicsIt introduces the three heroes and their stances, the Legacy Edition hot-swap system that lets you change characters mid-fight, and the stat point and skill point screens you will use at every level-up.
Best ForPlayers who have never touched War in the North, including those returning from the 2011 original who want a refresher on the Legacy Edition's new systems and UI.
Pro TipRead the first section before you even leave the Prancing Pony, because the hot-swap tutorial is the single mechanic that most changes how you play compared to the original release.

Party AI & Co-op Tips

Getting the most from your AI allies and friends

What It CoversHow the two AI-controlled party members behave when you are not directly controlling them, and how the Legacy Edition's full party equipment and skill control lets you tune every hero.
Key MechanicsIt explains the revive mechanic, how to split aggro in co-op, and how the shared Hero Mode combo meter rewards coordinated play between friends.
Best ForSolo players who want their AI allies to carry their weight, and co-op parties looking to optimize their teamwork on higher difficulties.
Pro TipCheck your AI allies' gear and skill points after every chapter — a neglected hero will fall behind exactly when you need to hot-swap to them in a boss fight.

Core Mechanics

War in the North is a third-person action RPG built around a three-hero party. You control Eradan the Ranger, Andriel the Loremaster and Farin the Champion, switching between them on the fly in combat. Every hero has three stances — melee, ranged and defensive — each with its own skill tree. The core combat loop is light-attack chains into heavy finishers, timed blocks and parries, and roll-dodges to avoid unblockable attacks. Killing enemies builds a combo meter that fills Hero Mode, a temporary damage boost that can be shared across co-op partners. Outside combat you spend stat points (Strength, Will, Stamina, Dexterity) and skill points each time you level, and you must manage party health, mana and potions across long levels.

Advantages

The Guides hub makes the game approachable from minute one. The beginner guide removes the confusion around the opening hours in Bree, explaining the hot-swap system that the Legacy Edition added and the controls that many players struggle with on their first session. Our difficulty guide helps you choose between the default and the unlocked Heroic and Legendary modes, and the New Game Plus guide explains what carries over. Because the Legacy Edition is a fresh 2026 release, the guides also cover the exact pain points players actually hit today — controller and Steam Deck settings, ultrawide support and party AI behaviour — rather than generic advice pulled from a decade-old wiki.

Challenges

Because the Legacy Edition launched on August 11, 2026 and is a remaster of a 2011 title, some guide details are still being confirmed. Exact numbers — such as the precise scaling of every skill or the full stat-point math of the endgame — are compiled from the original release plus community testing and may be adjusted as Aspyr ships patches. A few sections are written with the caveat as of launch and could become outdated quickly. We recommend checking the Steam news feed and the official Aspyr Discord when an update ships, and we will revise the affected guides as soon as new information is verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Legacy Edition a remake or a remaster?+
The Legacy Edition is a remaster rather than a full remake. It is built from the original 2011 game by Snowblind Studios with substantial quality-of-life improvements added by Aspyr: restored 3-player online co-op, on-the-fly character hot-swapping, full party equipment and skill control, a refined lock-on system, an improved user interface with visible party health and experience bars, 60 FPS support and automatic saving with multiple save slots. The story, levels and voice acting are the same as the original, so players who finished the 2011 release will recognize every chapter.
Which difficulty should I start on?+
The game offers multiple difficulty settings, and the Legacy Edition adds New Game Plus after you finish the campaign. Most players recommend starting on the normal difficulty for your first run so you can learn the block, dodge and hot-swap systems before enemy damage spikes. Heroic mode raises enemy health and damage significantly, and Legendary mode is tuned for experienced players and those who completed a previous run. You unlock higher difficulties by finishing the game, so there is no pressure to start hard — the default campaign is already a solid challenge.
Does the game run well on Steam Deck?+
Community reports and our own testing indicate that War in the North: Legacy Edition runs well on Steam Deck. The game targets 60 FPS on modern hardware, and the default graphics preset on the Deck is comfortable with only occasional dips during the busiest boss fights. The controls translate cleanly to the Deck's gamepad layout, including the hot-swap and lock-on mechanics that are central to the Legacy Edition. If you want a smoother experience, lowering shadow quality and disabling motion blur in the graphics settings gives a more consistent frame rate.
How do I save my progress?+
The Legacy Edition adds automatic saving and multiple save slots, which was one of the most requested improvements from players of the original game. The game autosaves at checkpoints and between chapters, and you can also save manually from the pause menu into one of several slots. This means you can keep separate runs for different difficulty modes or branch points, and the risk of losing hours of progress to a crash or a wrong dialogue choice is largely gone compared to the 2011 release.

Quick Tips

💡

Bind your block, dodge and hot-swap keys before the first fight in Bree. The Legacy Edition adds instant character switching, and getting comfortable with it early lets you interrupt a goblin's combo with Farin and finish it with Eradan's bow. Practice the rhythm of light-chain, heavy-finisher, dodge in the opening courtyard so it becomes muscle memory before the difficulty rises.

💡

Spend your first stat points with a plan. Strength boosts melee damage, Will feeds Andriel's spells and your mana pool, Stamina raises maximum health and Dexterity improves ranged damage and critical strikes. A balanced spread works in the early game, but by level ten you should lean into the two stats your chosen build actually uses so your hero scales into the mid-game.

💡

Keep potions on your quick slots and check your party's health between fights. AI allies revive each other and you can revive them, but a party that enters a boss fight at half health will burn through its potion supply instantly. Stock up at Bree's vendors before you leave the safe area, and make sure Andriel's healing skills are unlocked if you are playing with a melee-heavy party.

💡

Talk to every named character in Bree and Rivendell. The Legacy Edition keeps the original's missable dialogue, and several achievements are tied to conversations you can permanently lose by advancing the main story. A quick detour to exhaust every NPC dialogue option when you first reach a town costs almost no time and saves a full playthrough of achievement hunting later.
